United Bank for Africa Foundation (UBAF) in collaboration with The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) on Friday November 11th, 2022 launched the 3rd Edition of the National Essay Competition (NEC) for pupils in Senior Secondary Schools across Sierra Leone. The essay competition offers an opportunity for pupils in examination classes to strengthen their critical thinking, civics, and other skillsets relevant for their academic growth. The winners will be given an opportunity to win a scholarship grant for their university education up to the limits of Le50,000 Le30,000 and Le20,000 for the first, second and third positions respectively. NEC is a UBA Foundation Initiative that started in 2011 as part of UBA Group’s drive to improve the access to education for the under-privileged across Africa. This year’s essay topic is “Transforming Education requires collective effort including that of families and communities. Discuss specific interventions from families and or communities that can improve quality in education”.
The event was held at the Bintumani Hotel and was graced by the MD/CEO of UBA Sierra Leone, Mr Usman Isiaka, The UBA Board Chairman, Dr Claudius Bart-Williams, Mr Sidi Bakarr- A Board Member, Representatives from MBSSE including District Directors of all the 16 districts, pupils, 2nd NEC Top 12 finalists, teachers, parents, and representative from prominent media houses in Sierra Leone. The session was interactive and speeches were made by the Board Chairman, MD/CEO, The Representative from MBSSE and 1st Runner up 2nd NEC Edition. In his speech, the MD/CEO UBA Sierra Leone Usman Isiaka said “UBA Foundation is committed to organising NEC annually to compliment the Sierra Leone government’s efforts in promoting quality education in the country”.
The pupils, parents, teachers and journalist also had time to asked questions regarding the essay competition. The event ended in a high note with the taking of pictures, sharing of flyers and every attendee was excited to spread the news about the essay competition to senior schools and qualified candidates. Media personalities present also reported this event on their media houses new brief channels.
