UBA Appoints Two Sierra Leonean to Its Board of Directors
The United Bank for Africa, Sierra Leone as part of the process of strengthening its position as a Global Bank with high local content has appointed two (2) more Sierra Leonean as members of its Board of Directors, in the persons of Dr. Claudius Bart-Williams as Independent Non-Executive Director and Mohamed Alhajie Samoura as Executive Director, Business Development.
Dr. Claudius Bart-Williams is a Financial Economist, Corporate Finance, Strategy, and Project Management Professional with over thirty (30) years of experience in education, consulting, corporate advisory, and finance. He is currently the Group Chief Executive of Pennarth Greene, a London and Africa-based licensed advisory and corporate finance firm, linking capital and opportunities in Europe and in emerging markets, especially in Africa. He has advised entities across West Africa and the United Kingdom and is a member of several boards including Royal Insurance Gambia Limited, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Business School and is also the former Chairman of the Board of Directors of Standard Chartered Bank (Sierra Leone) Limited.
Dr. Claudius Bart-Williams holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, a Master’s Degree in Economics & Finance and a Doctorate in same discipline.
Mohamed Samoura is a consummate banker with close to two decades of working experience in Sierra Leone banking industry. Until his appointment as Executive Director, he was the Head of Corporate Banking at Ecobank Sierra Leone where he started as Credit Administration Officer in 2007 and soon grew to be a banking executive. With a passion in banking and drive to create impact in the business and financial arena, he has several accolades and was able to transform a loss making branch to a profit making branch during his tenure as Branch Manager. Mr. Samoura will be bringing on board his wealth of experience and understanding of the corporate and institutional banking landscape in the country to further strengthen UBA’s play in this market segment and its overall industry leadership aspirations.
Mohamed Samoura holds a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in History and Political Science and a Master’s degree in Business Administration and Marketing.
This appointment brings to nine (9) the number of the directors of the bank with six (6), including the Chairman, Abdu Sheku Kargbo as Sierra Leonean. The multitude of local directors is part of the UBA Group’s strategic focus on domesticating the governance, products and services of the bank to meet the local requirements of the host economy in all its 20 presence countries in Africa.

Specifically, on the 26th of March 2020 through the UBA Foundation, UBA was the first corporate organidsation in the country to provide significant support to the Government on the COVID-19 interventions with a donation of the sum of Le1.4 billion. UBA Sierra Leone under the auspices of UBA Foundation in October 2020 further launched the UBA Foundation National Essay Competition, in partnership with the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, where 3 pupils from the Sierra Leone Grammar School and the Annie Walsh Memorial Secondary School emerged National Winners, whisking scholarship grants worth 50million Leones, 30million Leones and 20million Leones respectively while 9 other winners cutting across the provinces where given brand new Laptops.
